FTEC - Wednesday Day Shift

Wilson was not happy to find that Adah was still in the clinic. Frowning he went over her chart carefully but could find nothing that immediately jumped out at him as a cause or cure. He considered trying to call House but then remembered the events of their last meeting and figured that would be a bad idea.

Sitting down at the front desk with the chart, Wilson began to work the ddx the old fashion way, with large books and some sneezing.

...

Those books were dusty damn it!

Or, perhaps, finally, not so much, although the improvements were minute. Heavy lidded eyes were now somewhat aware once they opened, following the path of her hearing the day before. She couldn't distinguish what she saw, just blurs and colors and, in a few rare instances, shapes, like all she heard yesterday was noise without qualification, but it was still something, and she stared hard at the most prominent ones, as if some part of her still knew that it wanted to see them, wanted to understand what they were, but just....couldn't.

During a quiet spell at the post office, Beauty slipped out and snuck quietly into Adah's room at the clinic. She left a bouquet of flowers (http://a1128.g.akamai.net/7/1128/497/0001/www.proflowers.com/prodimg/MBQbirds_l.jpg) on the bedside table, ones that she'd chosen because they reminded her of the decorations A.J. had painted on Adah's side of the room. And Beauty liked these especially because they did kind of look like birds, something she thought might cheer the sick girl.

There was motion; dully, Adah's eyes caught onto it, seemingly ready to follow it until it caught the color of the flowers, and the focus shifted toward that, instead. So bright that it almost made her draw in a breath too long against the respirator's steady pace that it hurt.

River had brought an apple, more for symbolic reasons than because she thought Adah would eat it. She placed it on the table next to the bed, then paced around the room, throwing worried glances at Adah, her mind searching for any trickle of that flow of thoughts she was used to.

Any trickle that managed to pass through was base, simple. Reflections of the few things that was being processed behind half-lidded eyes. Movement, but just the state of movement, nothing about what actual movement was being noticed. Colors, but not what the colors were, just that they were different from the ones next to them.
