He'd had a comfortable dinner with Wilson, then retired to the small apartment with Cash. Cash had taken a while to settle down, preferring to run around the apartment and pester House to throw his ball for him. The pair had finally collapsed in the bed, sometime after midnight.

House swung open the clinic doors just after 8 am. He was showered and shaved and breakfasted. Cash had eaten and romped out in the courtyard. It was a rare morning for House, and the clinic was the last place he wanted to be, but there he was. At the desk, sucking on a red lolly while Cash played with the ball at his feet.

Dr is in. Coffee is brewing, Johnny Cash is singing to the waiting room. Come on in. He is still taking blood samples, if anyone is willing to give

"Dr. House, and likewise." Susan smiled and held out her hand, then laughed at the puppy. "Hello again, Cash. I see you're having a good day."

"Yes, he showed me everything I needed. I hope you don't mind, but I already moved my supplies into the Counseling room, and re-arranged the furniture. The place was a bit sterile for my tastes." She smiled, still a little nervous, then bent down to pet Cash. "He said there weren't any outstanding cases at the moment, but that the former counselor left files? Would it be possible to review them?"

"Thank you, I appreciate this. I've never taken over more than one patient at a time before; I do hope most of them are going to be tolerant of the transition." She tapped the card against her fingers, then frowned. "Dr. Wilson said Jonathan was a student. Had he been here long? Was this just peer counseling that he was doing? It seems... rather irregular, for him to have taken on that kind of responsibility," she said, cautious of not sounding critical. How a clinic was run was ultimately up to the chief of staff; alienating Dr. House wouldn't be a good idea on her first day there.

"Hmm. Well, perhaps his files will give me an idea of what his practice was like. I'm glad it was voluntary, at any rate." Susan smiled. "If you need any help with patients, I'll be happy to lend a hand. Especially since this is my first week, I suspect I'll be looking for things to do."

"I am, actually. Psychiatry as well as psychology. I suppose I'm terribly overqualified in some ways, but since I've never worked in a school setting, I hope it helps me compensate." She bit her lip. "I really was terribly glad to get the offer. My work environment in England had become-- toxic, I suppose, is the best word. This is a welcome change from that."

Susan nodded. "I shall do my best, of course." And if she could just remember how she dealt with naiads and dwarves, griffins and Talking Leopards, long ago in another country-- or hallucination-- perhaps she'd have a chance. "And I'm glad it wasn't just me. I'm afraid I made a proper fool of myself, when Dr. Wilson tried to bring me up to speed. It took meeting a Talking Cat for me to take him seriously. And this after Dean Washburn mentioned gremlins." She sighed, then brightened. "Still, the Island is lovely, and the people have all been very welcoming so far. I'm sure I'll be able to adjust, given time."

"Not last night, no. Since we're talking later in another thread. Dr. Wilson said something about Faithful being a... familiar? Or companion? I assume this Alanna practices magic, then." She cocked her head. "And Dr. Wilson already admitted he doesn't think much of my profession. I hope you don't share his distaste, but I shan't be bothered if you do."

"You're not my patient, you're my colleague. I wouldn't dream of analyzing you, or at least, I'd never share what I might note without being asked for an opinion. No one thanks a workaholic therapist. And I suspect this place shall keep me busy enough, without soliciting my associates for work."

She listened to his explanation of his medical condition with a frown, then nodded judiciously. "I'm sorry to hear that therapy wasn't helpful to you under your changed circumstances. It can assist others in learning to cope, but I've never been a supporter of automatic treatment when the patient is resistant. It's much better to wait, in my experience, and see what strategies they develop on their own, if they reject the initial recommendation. Otherwise you're fighting the patient and their prognosis, usually to the detriment of both."

She bit her lip. "And if you don't mind me throwing an aspirin bottle at you when you snap at me, I think we'll rub along tolerably well."

"I'll shout 'incoming!' then, before I pitch it." Susan smiled, showing dimples. "Right, then. Back to the student files for me. I appreciate the explanations and information."
